November we continue in our mission to present music for everyone in our community in our focused series based a few minutes walk from the Central Line in Leytonstone. Big sounds and big ideas continue in our second festival show, where everyone will champion the idea of presenting music at its most accessible, open and intriguing.
CoMA London is a community ensemble of strings, woodwind, brass, piano and percussion, conducted by Lucia Švecová. It is part of the national charity Contemporary Music for All, which has a vision for contemporary music to be open to everyone, celebrating participation in new music-making as an essential part of our lives. Today they perform music written especially for this unusual community, contemporary ensemble by Hannah Kendall, Nevada Summerley, Dave Smith and Philip Venables. The set combines buoyant rhythms, free improvisation and ebullient noisemaking.
Saxophonist Trish Clowes & cellist Louis McMonagle have been making music together for over 15 years. Each musician has built a reputation for delivering powerful performances, premiering and commissioning new works, and forging alternative paths on the London contemporary music scene. Their new album ‘Colour Fields’, released on Stoney Lane Records, presents a collection of collaborative compositions and improvisations, exploring texture, mood, and melody – think Wayne Shorter meets Kronos Quartet.
Contemporary jazz string trio J.A.M. String Collective bring improvising strings to the fore. The all-female group is based in London, formed of violinist Jan Halen, violist Julia Dos Reis, and cellist Miranda Lewis-Brown. Last year the group released their debut album, She Looks Up at the Trees. The music occupies a fluid space between jazz and contemporary string sound worlds, with improvisation elements running throughout. Today, J.A.M. will perform as a duo, with Julia Dos Reis (viola) and Miranda Lewis-Brown (cello).
Arctic Circle's Daylight Music has, for nearly seventeen years, become an important part of London’s live music scene, with a weird and wonderful mix of musicians presenting ideas and storytelling in music and sound, alongside delicious cake, in some of the most splendid and iconic venues.
